From Carmen herself: "I’ve been making art for as long as I can remember. I’ve always felt most at home wandering through the mountains, surrounded by trees, rocks, wildflowers, and all the strange little shapes nature leaves behind. I love looking closely at the world and imagining that tiny creatures might be hiding everywhere - in the twist of a branch, the curve of a leaf, the shape of a stone, or somewhere between the shadows of the trees. That’s where many of my creatures begin. I sketch everything by hand, collecting little pieces of inspiration from nature walks, old buildings, and the unexpected shapes I stumble upon. Sometimes I start with nothing more than a strange little shape and let my imagination decide what it wants to become. My work is also a little piece of where I come from. With roots in both Spain and the Philippines, both places have found their way into my art in quiet little ways. The wrought-iron latticework found throughout Spain, for example, inspired the delicate iron patterns that become hair for some of my girls. I turn these creatures into stickers because I love the idea of carrying a little bit of magic with you. A tiny creature on your journal, something unexpected waiting to make you smile. At the heart of everything I make is nostalgia. That warm feeling of remembering a time when the world felt bigger, stranger, and a little more magical. When a walk through the mountains could become an adventure, a rock could become a friend, and every strange shape was something waiting to be discovered. I want my art to hold onto that feeling of childlike wonder - the part of us that never quite stopped believing there was magic hiding in ordinary places. Welcome to the Secret Garden of Carmen."
